USB-powered Christmas lights. A holiday love story. Scala 3 opaque types: How to create meaningful type names.

Scala 3 modules: How to build modular systems. If it will work, I will solder and shrink wrap the reversed connections. I do a lot of automotive re-wiring with no problem, so should be able to handle christmas light wiring. I have 15 strings to repair, so want to make sure what I plan to do will work. I'm unsure about polarity of the LEDs. I know it can be a problem with 12 volt circuitry, but not sure what AC current does to the circuit.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide. Thanks for the helpful idea! Tip 2 years ago. I have a bit of confusion. I thought leds were direct current devices. Light when current flows in forward bias direction and not in reverse. Yet you are successfully using an ac detector to find the open led. OR does the string of leds and their resistors self rectify the ac line current when the string is working, but when open the ac is detectable?

Reply 6 weeks ago. I think it still works because even though it is converted to DC by way of a rectifier not sure if they are full wave or half wave it most likely does not have a filter capacitor. So while it is DC, it is pulsating DC.

The voltage detector is looking for the pulses, I think. There would be no need to include a filter capacitor--it would only add additional cost and one more component that would eventually fail. Plus, there's really no good place to put it. Question 1 year ago on Introduction. I have a string of LED lights, never used, but no longer on warranty. I plugged them in this Christmas for the first time and not one bulb lit up, so I started testing.

All bulbs work when individually tested on a 3. I plugged in a working string at the end of the non working string, and the working string lights up. I tested the continuity of the third wire, as well as the other two and have continuity. Thank you all in advance for your help. Happy New Year. I'm trying to repair the wiring for a string of 3 color changing LED spotlights, made by 'Holiday Home', that got run over by a lawn mower.

The second and third light in the string remain connected and in tact but the first light, where the input power enters the string, was severed as was the female outlet used to connect adjoining lights. From the first light, in addition to the power in cord, are 3 more wires like common lamp cord. Where do these wires connect?

Outdoor lights can end up with water in the outer globe! This, combined with the tinned steel!! LED leads, can cause the leads to corrode over their year of storage. I've needed to replace 8 LED's in a single string. The strings need to be dried before storage. Question 2 years ago. I have a 60ft string of white LED Christmas lights and a small section of the lights are dimmer than the others.

Approximately 30ft are good and bright then about 10ft are dim and then the other 20ft are good again. A 'beeper' a wireless continuity checker that will quickly locate a bulb that is missing sometimes hard to find when string is 'embedded' in a tree branch or garland , shattered glass part is broken , burned out proper blackened area on bulb indicating filament and shunt both burned out , loose fitting bulb holders in their sockets and any broken or misaligned wire 'legs' that stick out the bottom of the bulb holder.

Other features A light bulb tester that can test bulbs while still installed in their little plastic holders. Very handy for making SURE that a spare or slightly used?

A fuse tester. Note: very rare for a fuse to blow, but can happen, so nice to be able to test. A tool for removing bulbs in their little holders from sockets. Note: I have always used my fingers to do this job.

Bulb holders slightly different between strings made by many mfrs, so haven't really figured out how to use this feature. There is a little compartment to store spare bulbs. In my case, I keep bulbs bare and in sockets sorted by socket type bulbs in sockets or voltage bare bulbs in those plastic boxes from the hardware store that have a clear lid with a whole bunch of small compartments inside These boxes are also handy for storing the other small parts like crystals for lite spheres and parts for similar novelty fixtures and strings.

I have found that, with much use, the batteries that power the Light Keeper will fade to the point where the 'beeper' function will get erratic or weak, so keep a spare set of batteries handy. Most of the time, I can quickly repair strings while they are in place.
